Greetings Fellow Boggers from Dame Viv, Autocrat, and Baroness Charmaine, Co-Autocrat, of 12th Night--

A most sincere and hearty Thank You to all of you for a wonderful, successful and enjoyable Bog 12th Night!

What a great event! Even though we were helping to run it, we had a great time--thanks to all of you who pitched in your time and effort and made it fun for all. Special thanks to Lord Francis Martin, Lady Morrigan of Willowbrook and their children for their help with set-up, troll, kitchen, clean-up, etc., etc. etc.!!! Thanks to Baroness AElfra and all her helpers for the FABULOUS sideboard; to Don Iago and Lord Kusar for spending most of their day upstairs working on scrolls; to THL Cynthia, Dona Caroline and all their helpers for taking care of troll and auction monies; to Lord Connor, Lord Rudolph and Lady Sonya for working the auction; to Fianna and our Bardic contestants for their entertainment; to Lady Sarai for leading the dancing. There were gentles from out of the area to thank as well, such as Master Edmund and THL Cadell who ran a Heraldry table for most of the day. There are many, many more of you to thank--those of you who helped with set-up, clean-up, who guarded, who fetched and carried. Sorry we can't name you all, but we saw you working and we are most grateful to every single one of you.

Congrats to everyone who received Baronial and Kingdom awards, especially to Don Iago for his Cornelian. (First Bogger to receive this Kingdom award for courtesy, if we're not mistaken.) Vivat!!!

Once again, we had many, many gentles from out of the area comment on the beauty and perfection of Green Gables as a "period" site--all of which we passed on to Teresa Marafino, who is always so pleased to hear them. After attending Kingdom 12th Night and hearing of the problems the autocrats had with their site, we are once again so grateful for Teresa and Green Gables who bend over backwards to accommodate us. We are indeed fortunate to have a such a gem of a site within the Bog lands!

Which leads me (Charmaine) to two other items of importance concerning Green Gables:

One, I have reserved the date of SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2003, for the Green Gables demo so please mark that on your calendars now. As the date grows closer, I will have more information, although I expect the demo will be similar to others at Green Gables--fencing, fighting, dancing, displays, etc.

Two, after speaking to various gentles--including Her Highness Maurya, Baron Connor MacLiam, and Dame Catelin Parry (plus, of course, Teresa Marafino)--I am planning to propose that the Bog host Kingdom 12th Night next year, 2004, at Green Gables. This will mean combining our traditional 12th Night with the Kingdom one and moving that date up to the second weekend of January (Jan. 10, 2004). I have lots of plans already stewing around in my fuzzy little head for this and will be bringing it up at the next Bog business meeting in February.

The best to all of you and our thanks again!

--Dame Viv and Baroness Charmaine

From the Seneschal

Greetings unto their Excellencies and the Populous of the Bog,
As I write this our 12th Night has just passed. It was glorious. Thank you's go out to the autocrats for making it possible and everyone for making it what it was. Congratulations to all our award recipients and Vivats to our new Baronial Bardic Champion.
Last evening I had need to travel and one thought became predominant in my slightly frozen mind "isn't winter over yet!!!!" Sharing time together over hearth fires is a pleasant way to spend the evening but I'm sure we all would agree that sitting out on a porch listening to birds chirp beats it by a mile! Until that daydream becomes a reality I bid you all safe travels as you brave the cold of winter to attend events in our sylvan kingdom. And for those of us unable to attend please bring back tales of your encounters. Sharing adventures and mirth is a fine way to warm the spirit.
Stay warm, stay safe and let us cross our fingers that the local fore teller of  weather, the four legged provost of climate, yes, the ground hound- let us hope he calls for an early spring.

In Service,
Lady Talishar
Seneschal

From the Chronicler

Greetings all,
Vivats to Dame Viv and Baroness Charmaine on an excellent 12th Night.  And Vivats to all the Boggers and friends of the Bog who received awards during Baronial and Royal Court - all awards well deserved!
I had hoped to put a photo or two into this month's newsletter, but alas mundane life got in the way of my plans.  But I will check on prices, and hopefully be able to add this feature to occasion future issues.  If anyone has any artwork they would like to contribute, please contact me.  And anyone with your tales of an event, even 12th Night, please send them along - perhaps a personal account of something especially enjoyable or moving that happened to you.
Have any suggestions, ideas, questions, or a submission?  Contact me at 724-238-0114 or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.

In service,
Lady Caitilin "Cait" ni Mhaolconaire

From the Archery Captain

Greetings to one and all!

Hope you are all braving the cold weather well and getting over the recent loss on the field of honor by our local wielders of steel and pigskin.

Soon it will be time to start thinking about shooting, if you aren't doing so at your local range already. Check that bow over and make sure it is still good. If that string needs replacing, do it now! And, if you are a few arrows short, get hold of your local fletcher. We are looking forward to having a lot of fun this year and you know if you aren't breaking and/or losing arrows you aren't shooting. If you aren't shooting, you aren't having fun. For fun's sake, don't be caught short!

Bring all the arrows ya have to Spring Thing 2003! There will be a serious novelty shoot with unlimited shots as well as Royal Rounds. War Points take place if time allows.

In service,
Lord Derrick the Wanderer

Three Day Bid from THL Cynthia was accepted.

Financial Committee to meet on January 28th at 6:30 at AElfra's. We will begin to layout a budget this will enable us to figure out a bottom line. (the balance we don't want to fall under) Items needing budgeted for will include our annual events, officer stipends etc. This coming fiscal year money is going to be earmarked to be spent on the possible following items: Spiff up guards and champions. Banners for the Barony, have a die made for leather stamping Baronial awards (and maybe an escarbuncle), and many more.
No new pressing business was thought of, no old unfinished stuff was remembered so Chaos was declared.

News from the Western Border

Report from the Western Border:

Greetings unto the populace of the Bog and beyond!
First I'd like to thank Baroness AElfra for braving the cold, snowy weather to join us for our January gathering.
We had a small attendance, but I thank everyone who came.  As the meeting progressed, the snow continued to fall outside.  One amongst the attendees was a possible new member.  Our baroness gave him a summation of the SCA, and Master Gwilym talked to him about Archery.
A brief update on pertinent topics was given - Lord Connor's planned meeting with Bog fighters; reservations for 12th Night; and everyone was reminded to bring their membership cards to the event.
     Stories and general merriment followed!

The next gathering on the Borderland will be February 11, 2003, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Adams Memorial Library (1112 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA; 724-539-1972; Adams Memorial Library)

In service to Bog and Crown,
Lady Caitilin ni Mhaolconaire

St. Swithin's Bog Annual Spring Event 2003:

Defending the Borders

Listen m'Lords and m'Ladies to the drums of battle as they grow louder and closer to our border.  All the enemies of our fair kingdom have banded against us and we stand alone.  Bring your favorite weapon and your courage for the enemy attacks at dawn (well okay, the site opens at 10 a.m. on June 14th).  A call goes out to our archers, fighters, fencers, those who brandish thrown weapons, and supporters to assist us on this fateful day to silence the opponents war songs.

Speaking of which, there will be two Bardic competitions held for the pleasure of our Baron and Baroness this day.  First, we wish to hear of war's tragedies and glories, and if we win the day (and we will) the second round of Bardic tales and songs shall be those which will lighten the hearts of our noble Baron and fair Baroness.  We really wanna see them lose their decorum!

There will Arts and Sciences to document this moment in history, so please bring forth your displays of artistic prowess related to the finer articles necessary for battle, the support of our swordsmen and archers, or the favors our ladies presented to their Lord's as remembrances of their affection (please remember your documentation).

The children will not be forgotten in this time of great dire and need.  Activities are being planned and crafting supplies available for some age appropriate A&S.

The winners of the days competitions will be determined by might of arms, ability to breing tears to the eyes, and skill at making the Baroness experience a giggle fit of such extremes that she will need assistance to keep from falling off her thrown.

Our traditional event site has been secured at the Flax Scutching Grounds (No street address) for June 14, 2003.  Should you have any questions or food related requirements, please contact Lord Derrick the Wanderer (autocrat) @ 724-433-6784 after 8 p.m. or email him at ThornesKeep@hotmail.com.
