Greetings unto the Populous of the Bog and all Good Gentles of the Known World who read these words. I hope that the Holiday Season was a safe and joyful one for all.
Now to address the upcoming year. First
let me send wishes to everyone that this year they find themselves in good
health, good spirits and surrounded by family and friends. I send best wishes
that all are able to attend the events they desire, that travels will go well
and wonderful memories will be made each and every time they venture forth into
our Sylvan Kingdom of AEthelmearc and the Known World.
Here at home, I have the following on my "wish
list"..... First and foremost I hope that I will do an appropriate job as
your Seneschal. I desire to meet the responsibilities of office and go beyond
that to help the Bog to be not just a fun place but a growing one also. I'm
looking forward to drive and motivation finding its way back into many of our
scadian lives and calendars. I'm anticipating seeing more Boggers work together
on activities and interests. All the different interests we involve ourselves in
when we participate in the SCA are enjoyable. But, aren't they so much more
enjoyable when we engage in activities together?
I would like to challenge the Bog to challenge
ourselves. In groups large or small, let us make A&S items, let us
illuminate and calligraphy. When we find ourselves wanting to try cooking a new
recipe, brew a new beer or sew a new pattern let us put the word out and have
others join us. Not only will it be more fun, but we can share what we know and
what we learn. I understand that many times our mundane lives predominate, but I
hope to see everyone attend something at least a few times . In order for much
of this to happen we will need the dedication and direction of our capable
officers. Each and everyone of our officers are intelligent people capable of
doing a fine job in office, I hope that you (Officers) will take up the
challenge as well and help lead the challenge in motivating our members.
Looking forward to sharing a fun and interesting year with
everyone,
Lady Talishar of Long
Seneschal
Greetings all,
I hope everyone is enjoying a peaceful holiday
season.
Well, this is my 6-month anniversary of being
Chronicler. My biggest goal so far has been to get both the hard and
electronic versions of the newsletter out to everyone in a timely manor; which
sometimes I've achieved and sometimes it's been just a little late.
With the new year, I would like to broaden my goals and
have the chance to add new things. When possible, I'd like to put a few
photos relating to our major events in both versions of the newsletter; although
this will be cost dependant for the hard copy. I would also like to add
recipes, book or movie reviews, articles on events attended outside the area by
Boggers, and articles on various scadian topics... humorous articles or stories
(i.e. a "no S*** there I was..." tale) would also be welcome (but let
us remember this is a family show).
Anyone with suggestions, ideas, questions, or a
submission, please contact me at 724-238-0114
or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.
In service,
Lady Caitilin "Cait" ni Mhaolconaire
From the Deputy Seneschal
It's been a whole year since Talishar handed me a copy of
the Keys to the Bog. During that time I've learned some of what it takes
to be Seneschal. Here is a portion of that list: A sense of humor, a very large jug of Lemon Drop Martinis, and a very long fuse, a fast
vehicle, and a big bottle of Tylenol and most important to apologize when I'm wrong.
Over the past years, I have come to appreciate the
"difference of opinion" that exists. A very wise person
said it this way: "We must have people (opinions) on all ends of the
spectrum or we will get out of balance."
In Service,
Katya
Lady Katerina De La Marne
From the Chatelaine
The chatelaine department has been rather quiet this
fall and winter as far as demos. However, I have gotten quite a few interested
people contacting me via email through our website, and I’ve been replying via
the same. I’ve also snail-mailed a goodly number of newcomer handouts.
These newcomer handouts are available to anyone in the
group who may want them, as are Chatelaine business cards. Please let me know if
you need copies.
The term of my office is up at the 3-Day Event in July
2003, and I would like to step down at that time. If you are interested in the
office of Chatelaine, please make your intent known to me and to our seneschal
Lady Talishar.
In service,
Baroness Charmaine

From the Arts and Sciences officer
Greetings Boggers,
We are going to have a dance practice following the
Business meeting in January.
If anyone is interested in learning something about SCA court dancing, they are
welcome to join us. I suspect the time will be approximately 7 p.m. to 9
p.m. This, of course will take place at Lady Sarai's manor-- the usual
place of our business meetings.

Well thing's have changed for the Heavy fighter's. We have a new knight marshal

Tower's Sunday and Wednesday.
I would like to have a meeting with ALL the heavy fighter's in January or
February.
Let me know if Jan. 19 or 26 about 2:00pm is good for you. If
not,
we can make it for Feb.

From the Archery Captain
To all good gentles,
"I'm the who? You want me to do WHAT?"
I am most pleased and humbled to be elected your new captain
of the archers. Hopefully, I will be able to fill the boots that Lord John has
left me and continue to implement the good works he started.
Presently, plans are being laid to provide the populous
with more opportunities to participate in Royal Rounds as the weather improves.
Lord Laochlain has indicated that he may be able to provide sites to shoot.
Your ideas and feedback are always welcome, as this is
your archery program. Attempts will be made to create any novelty targets that
can be thought up. What rewards would you like to shoot for?
I hope that all were able to enjoy a good holiday
season.
See you on the range soon!
In service,
Lord Derrick the Wanderer
If you were born in January, please check your authorization card for the expiration date!

Minutes from December Barony Business Meeting
Greetings Fellow Boggers,
The following items were discussed/took place at the
December Baronial Business Meeting:
From the Baron and Baroness: Have good Holidays. Go to events and have fun (Kingdom 12th night is close). WE NEED BIDS FOR THE THREE DAY.
We have: $6,574.37
Scribal meetings are resuming, contact Kusar. Talk of a Dance/Christmas Party, word to come. Dance practice may be held in Westmoreland at a gathering.
Our Chatelaine gets contacted by people, she sends stuff out but hasn't heard back from anyone yet.
January is the big printed issue of the Sentinel. All officers are asked to write a missive. Address what is in store/plans for the coming year. Guild heads are also asked to address their plans in this issue. Remember the deadline is the 15th of the month.
Twelfth Night planning is on track and the event is to go off as usual, without a hitch.
The following additions or changes to Baronial Law and Policy were accepted: Preferred weekends for the Annual Baronial Events are - third weekend of January for Twelfth Night; the third weekend of July for the Three Day; and the fourth weekend of August for Baronial Champs.
For the purposes of Holding a Baronial Championship the definition of a Bogger is: You must physically reside within the boundaries of the Bog.
Bid Failures: When no event bids have been received by the deadline, any subsequent bids can be presented and voted on at either that monthly business meeting or at an officers meeting. The Baron/ess, Seneschal and Exchequer are the minimum required for approval. In the case of the loss of an autocrat and co-autocrat, the Baron/ess, Seneschal and Exchequer are the minimum that are required to appoint a new autocrat.
The go ahead was give for the Chronicler to try inserting photos into the newsletter, of course on line this presents no problem, so it may be tried for the printed issue, a cost analysis will be done and if the cost was prohibitive then photos will no longer be in the printed issue.
........... And then chaos ensued.

News from the Western Border
Report from the Western Border:
Greetings unto the populace of the Bog and beyond!
We hope everyone enjoyed or is still enjoying the
holidays.
For a change, all is quiet on the Western front!
Lord Derrick is still searching for volunteers to help run children's activities
at Spring Thing 2003, and he is also in need of trolls (although not as
desperately as before). By January, he hopes to have the date confirmed
and the event teaser in the AEstel. Anyone wishing to help out, please contact
Derrick at 724-433-6784 or email Rose.
Rose and Cait (being me), in a moment of insanity,
agreed to host Spring Thing 2004, and even have their idea - Murder and Mayhem
in the Bog. Weather permitting, they hope to bring a rough plan before the
Bog in either January or February for approval.
In September 2002, we had two new people attend one of
our meetings. We're pleased to report that they have continued to attend,
and are hoping to make Twelfth Night!
January 14, 2003, is our next meeting date, and
Dame Viv has graciously agreed to attend - weather permitting - and offer a
dance class... so let's have a nice turnout!!!
We'll meet at the Ligonier Valley Library (120 West Main Street, Ligonier
PA 15658; 724-238-6451; www.ligonierlibrary.org/directions.htm)
from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Although we can have the room from 6:00pm till
8:00pm, so feel welcome to arrive early or stay after for chatting or to utilize
the library for research.
In service to Bog and Crown,
Lady Caitilin ni Mhaolconaire

Cooking Guild
I am looking for an energetic and enthusiastic person to head the cooking
guild. If you are interested in period cooking and foods please consider taking
on this responsibility. Those interested may contact me at aelfra@cs.com or
814-539-0335.
AElfra
Scribal Guild
Contact Lord Kusar Ussed (mka Norm Ed) at 814-244-3335 or email him at nbe@westy.jtwn.k12.pa.us for information on the next meeting.
Sewing Guild
Nothing much has been going on in the Sewing Guild
for the past year or more. I had set up classes/demos when this guild started,
but the interest just wasn’t there.
My original thoughts for this guild were to use it as a
learning/teaching vehicle. It did make the summer guard tabards (white ones) a
few years ago, but it was not my intent to have the guild function as a
“sewing machine” for the Barony.
If anyone has ideas/suggestions for this guild or who
would be interested in taking over as head of this guild, please let me
know.

Baronial Bardic Championship at St. Swithin's Bog Twelfth Night
With 12th Night following so hard after New Years, which is itself one of
those "in-between times" when the veil between worlds is thin, we have
selected the theme for the competition.
We are asking for songs, tales, and poetry which speak
of the Other Worlds. Let one and all hear your ballads, stories and versus
of the faerie folk who sometimes remain behind when the veil closes once more.
