Kenn's Guide to Thrown Weapons for the SCA

So you want to throw sharp metal things at a target? Don't know what to throw or where to find them? Here's a list of helpful tips and some places where you can find good quality throwers.

Throwing Knives

If you want a good throwing knife that will stick consistently at 10 and 20 feet, you need a nice heavy knife that is at least 12" long. Short, light knives spin too fast and are harder to control. When you throw from ten feet your knife should make one complete rotation before you hit the target. You should have two complete rotations at 20 feet. Long knives rotate slower and give you the control you need.

I wanted to recomend these as a good, cheap starter set but they don't seem to be available right now. They aren't on United Cutlery's website and they are in Bud K's print catalog but listed as discontinued on the website. If you come across a set, maybe at Pennsic or another event, pick them up.

Throwing Axes

There are lots of throwing axes out there but as with the knives, you just need something durable and basic. I haven't found anything that throws better than a simple tomahawk or norse hand ax with a wooden handle. A head with a blade edge of 4 to 5 inches long and a handle between 16 to 19 inches long seems to work best. The shorter, funky, all-metal designs are fun to play with but are not consistent enough for competetion. Always buy some extra handles. You'll break or split one eventually.

Ragnar's Ragweed Forge
Ragnar's is the best vendor in the SCA to buy a good quality throwing axe from. I have four axes I purchased from him and use them all the time. Check out his site and see what catches your fancy. He always merchants at Pennsic.
