Greetings fellow Boggers,

We shall again meet at the East Hill Rec Building in Richland.  We had a great time and see much potential for its use.  Hopefully many of you will be able to get there this month.  Please bring any projects you are working on or just come for socializing and martial activities practice.
Next month is the Coronation of HRH Christopher and HRH Maurya.  This will be held the first Saturday in April, we hope to see many of you there.
     Think Spring!!
     Remember to pre-register for Pennsic.

Twelfth Night Thank You Addendum!

A sincere thanks to Lady Andree for taking such good care of head table! The Royals and their retainers very much appreciated the beautiful decorations, place settings, silver (gold!) ware and not having to deal with dirty dishes afterwards. Lady Andree has already promised to do the same for next year's 12th Night. Much, much thanks!

--Dame Viv and Baroness Charmaine

* Chronicler's Note: Baroness Charmaine had sent this to be added to the existing than you in February's newsletter.  Unfortunately, I missed the email... and apologize!  And concur, the table was beautiful Lady Andree!!!

From the Seneschal

Greetings fellow Boggers,

The winter drag's on but have faith warm temperatures will be here in time for Pennsic (where we will immediately begin to complain that its too hot and snow would be good). During one of the most dramatic snow events of the new millennium some of us met at East Hills Rec Center. A good time was had by all those who braved the deep snows and winds to attend. It was quite a pleasure to see his Majesty there. (And does anyone else find it odd that we rent a site and it snows like mad?) We are planning on renting it again this month for a gathering.  Hopefully the weather will co-operate.
Looking forward to seeing everyone soon. Take care and stay warm.

In Service,
Lady Talishar

From the Chronicler

Greetings all,
Hope everyone is staying safe and warm!
As I put the newsletter together I find myself glancing at the calendar on which is a photo of Palm Beach Aruba - warm beach, blue water, palm tree, blue sky, tan people in beach wear.  I have to ponder, would we really give up all this glittery snow, brick cold air (you know, the kind that makes your nose hairs freeze!  Yep, love it) for.... what am I saying... of course we would!  Here's dreaming of blue skies and warm breezes!
Have any suggestions, ideas, questions, or a submission?  Contact me at 724-238-0114 or bogchronicler@yahoo.com.

In service,
Lady Caitilin "Cait" ni Mhaolconaire

UPCOMING DEMOS

SATURDAY, APRIL 26: GIRL SCOUT DEMO in Summerhill, PA (north of Johnstown), afternoon. (Specific times and directions to come). I realize there are several big SCA events on this weekend, but I'm still hoping for a few people. Will any fencers be available, or lady fighters? (It would be really cool to show these girls some women in armor!) I'm also looking for medieval crafts and displays, and anything that can be demonstrated (weaving, calligraphy, leatherworking, etc.) Please email or call me if you think you can attend the demo.

SUNDAY, MAY 4: GREEN GABLES DEMO in Jennerstown, PA (12th Night site), afternoon 12-4 pm. PRODUCTION NUMBER DEMO!!! We've held this one before and we're doing it again! We'd like everyone to attend for fencing, fighting, dancing, displays. Come in garb and bring what you can for showing, demonstrating and talking about. This demo will be advertised in the Somerset and Johnstown papers.

From the Archery Captain

Once again does Lord Deryk Archer (note the name change) send greetings unto the archers of our fair St. Swithin's Bog,

I will soon be changing my name, but the quality will remain the same (saints help us all).
As I'm sitting here thinking of what to say, I realized that it's February and there's not a thing going on.  however, I would like to remind everyone that there are indoor archery ranges around the area including Flood City where some of our archers meet each Friday at 6:30.  Should you know of other indoor ranges please let me know and I'll post their locations here.
Don't forget that although Phil has seen his shadow, Spring really is just around the corner. Get your bows in shape and start stockpiling arrows!

In service,
Lord Deryk

Minutes from February Barony Business Meeting

Greetings unto the populous of the Bog,

Yes, I was a bad Seneschal and I missed the meeting. But it was for a good reason, so please forgive me.  I understand my Drop Dead did a find job having this thrown in her lap. There was some things I wished to discuss but I can get around to them later. I will share with you snippets of info that I received.
We went over the budget, Charmaine was given the go-ahead to put in a bid for Kingdom 12th Night (she will autocrat our regular 12th night if the bid is turned down). It was decided to try the East Hills gym for the first time on February 16, from 2-6 p.m. 12th Night event report finished. Demo April 26th Summerhill. Demo May 4 Green Gables.
Motion to spend money (on what??) approved. Knight marshal needs part of his stipend. Three day plans in works. Queen will have a Rattan champ, no fencing champ this reign. Youth fencing a go, check rules. Kusar to apply for marshalate. Lord Richard has offered his place for archery (THANK YOU - I say lets visit him). Children's archery program in the works. Marshals needed for the Spring Thing.
Kingdom 12th night bid approved, Charmaine will put it in. Budget approved-bog fiscal year budget that is. We are making our own holes (?).

So that's all I have for ya right now. Hope this was enlightening.

Baronial A&S Championship Competition

To all good people....

Being the current A&S Champ it is left to me to come up with the next theme and guidelines for the competition, with that here is the theme for the competition for the 3-day.  I'm giving it now so you will have time to do research and to construct your entry.

  1. Your entry must be something that is used in period to create something else (i.e. a period loom)

  2. Besides your entry you also must create a small sample of work to show that your entry actually works (i.e. a small piece of material using period design and material)

  3. Your entry must be accompanied with good concise documentation (i.e. primary sources, secondary sources). Photos of you using the object would be nice too.

This competition will be hard and will take a lot of research and time. But there is no reason that the Boggers (all being very talented) should not strive for a higher lever of A&S.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me....

Your humble servant
Ian

St. Swithin's Bog Annual Spring Event 2003:

Defending the Borders

Listen m'Lords and m'Ladies to the drums of battle as they grow louder and closer to our border.  All the enemies of our fair kingdom have banded against us and we stand alone.  Bring your favorite weapon and your courage for the enemy attacks at dawn (well okay, the site opens at 10 a.m. on June 14th).  A call goes out to our archers, fighters, fencers, those who brandish thrown weapons, and supporters to assist us on this fateful day to silence the opponents war songs.

Speaking of which, there will be two Bardic competitions held for the pleasure of our Baron and Baroness this day.  First, we wish to hear of war's tragedies and glories, and if we win the day (and we will) the second round of Bardic tales and songs shall be those which will lighten the hearts of our noble Baron and fair Baroness.  We really wanna see them lose their decorum!

There will Arts and Sciences to document this moment in history, so please bring forth your displays of artistic prowess related to the finer articles necessary for battle, the support of our swordsmen and archers, or the favors our ladies presented to their Lord's as remembrances of their affection (please remember your documentation).

The children will not be forgotten in this time of great dire and need.  Activities are being planned and crafting supplies available for some age appropriate A&S.

The winners of the days competitions will be determined by might of arms, ability to bring tears to the eyes, and skill at making the Baroness experience a giggle fit of such extremes that she will need assistance to keep from falling off her thrown.

Our traditional event site has been secured at the Flax Scutching Grounds (No street address) for June 14, 2003.  Should you have any questions or food related requirements, please contact Lord Derrick the Wanderer (autocrat) @ 724-433-6784 after 8 p.m. or email him at ThornesKeep@hotmail.com.
