From the Seneschale Greetings to all who reads these words, I hope that this missive finds you all in good
health and spirits. We are looking at the tail end of winter and I'm sure all
are eager for the arrival of spring! I trust everyone has used the long winter
months as time for productive mending and made all ready the upcoming event
season. I look forward to spending time in the warmth of the sun with all. Until
those long bright days arrive, be well. In service,

From the Archery Captain
Well, 12th Night is over and spring is just around the corner (we hope). Time to check out that bow and see if you need a new string or new arrows. We all want to be ready to have a good time this year, when the weather does clear. Having said that if there is anyone in the Barony interested in becoming more involved with Archery (helping out with targets, running archery tourneys, making arrows), and/or would like to function as my lieutenant, please contact me.
Shoot well and shoot safe, in service,
Lord Deryk Archer
Archery Captain

Tuesday, March 9th, from 6:00pm till 7:45pm, is the Bog's Ceili Night at the Adams Memorial Library (1112 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA; 724-539-1972) - everyone is welcome! If interested or if you have any question, contact Rose Thorne (Beth Rose 724-850-7404 RoseThorne@att.net).
Greetings fellow Boggers!
That pesky, confounded groundhog had to go and see
his shadow yet again. While spring isn't just around the corner, it is only
about 6 weeks away. That means that it is nearly time for the annual Spring
Thing event held out in the Westmoreland County area. This years theme is to be
Murder and Mayhem in the Bog. Please see the official event announcement for
details. We are looking for victims...er...volunteers to help out with some of
the days activities.
This is even more exciting for those of us living out
this way as word has come from Kingdom regarding the newly determined western
border of the barony. As you may know, there has been a great deal of moving and
shaking out this way for about a year now. There is an independent shire that
recently gained incipient status, as well as a group of Boggers working toward
forming a canton that will remain part of the Barony of St. Swithin's Bog.
Spring is a time of growth and renewal, which is certainly reflected in the
growth we are experiencing locally. Our gracious Seneschal and Baroness are
reworking the map to reflect these changes.
Adam's Memorial Library in Latrobe is reserved for our
monthly Ceili Night on March 9, 2004, from 6-7:45. Everyone is welcome to attend
the meeting. We usually wander over to Eat'n'Park in Latrobe after the meeting
ends.
In service,
Rose

The Baronial Business Meeting for February
The following is a short compendium of the sweetly short meeting for February.
Thanks were given for a
very wonderful 12th night. Congratulations were given to all those who received
awards.
Our exchequer informed us that there is 3,958.09 in
checking and 2006.00 in savings. The event report for 12th night will be
finished soon and available.
Our chatelaine desires to hold the annual Green Gables
spring demo on May 16th 2004.
On event business:
Charmaine will be entering a bid for next years 12th night. She has new ideas for food and auction.
The spring thing will still be held on June 5th and will be known as "Murder and Mayhem in the Barony."
As for AEthelmearc academy- there are those interested in hosting the fall session (Cait/Rose) and they will start planning so they may create a bid.
Three day will be on July 16,17 and 18, 2004 and the site is reserved.
News from the Pennsic War meeting: Plans are being made to raise monies in
order to fund the Baronial Dinner and Gobi Night. Also plans for Security and ID
carding at Gobi night are in the works.
Ian would like those with devices to get them to him so he and Lord Kenn may
update the website.
In regards to Officer/Financial meetings: they will be scheduled for March,
watch for dates and times.
Then practice resumed.
Talishar, BSSB Seneschale

St. Swithin's Bog 12th
Night Bid for 2005 This being a formal bid for 12th Night 2005: to be
held Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Green Gables in Jennerstown, PA (our usual
site). Autocrat: Baroness Charmaine. Co-autocrat: TBA.
Thespian Guild/Bardic Circle "All the world is a stage and the people merely players" Forgive me I
couldn't begin an an ad for a possible Thespian's guild without quoting
Shakespeare. While the quote could apply to all Scadians who dress up and get
together to play on a regular basis. My aim is to see if there is any interest
in starting a formal Thespian's guild i. Several areas within the Kingdom have
such guilds including Sunderoak and Endless Hills. I have quite some time ago
had offers from Baron Connor Mcliam to teach a class if I could find folks
interested. Before formally contacting him again I'm trying to gauge interest in
forming such a guild or having such a class. I would ask that anyone interested
contact Michela Summervale (mka Michelle Gelles) by e-mail
mgelles@charter.net or phone
814-539-4498. I would also be interested in opening my home for a Bardic Circle at some
point if people are interested. Though I've no talent for singing myself I do
enjoy poetry and have given a recitation or two. I would imagine most of us
share a love for period and/or fantasy literature and song and would enjoy
having a celebration devoted to the same (especially with the release of return
of the king fast approaching:-) Michela
It was a dark and stormy night when two members of
the Barony of St. Swithin’s Bog gathered to plot a day of Murder and Mayhem. Ok,
so it wasn’t really stormy, but we did plot... and Murder and Mayhem will be the
theme for the 6th annual Spring Thing event to be held June 5, 2004 at the Flax
Scutching Grounds in Stahlstown, PA (no street address). The mistresses of
murder OR mayhem will be autocrat, Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire, and featocrat, Rose
Thorne.
I would like to autocrat 12th Night again next year due
to its being Dame Viv and Don Quinn’s first 12th Night as Baroness and Baron. I
have several ideas to make the day a little different, although not overly so
since gentles seem to like our laid-back, unstructured event.
First, I propose to eliminate the feast and have an
all-day sideboard with different dishes appearing throughout the day. Heartier
dishes would appear at lunch time (stews, sandwich makings) and normal feast
time (hot meats, cooked vegetables). The rest of the day the sideboard would
consist of various finger foods for nibbling (raw veggies, fruits, cheese, etc.)
This would require having a feastocrat in charge of the sideboard to co-ordinate
the arrival and serving of foodstuffs. There would still be a high table and
servers required for it. To keep our good relations with Green Gables, I would
ask them to provide the hot meats for the evening.
Second, there would be a Chinese auction instead of our
regular one, and I would ask beforehand for specific items from various Baronial
artisans and cooks. Every gentle attending would receive several tickets with
their site fee for the auction, and could purchase more. Bags next to each item
would hold the ticket stubs and winners would be drawn for the auction items
after the courts.
Plus along with dancing and Bardic competition, perhaps
we could have a gaming tournament or two to pass the time.
Costs would be hopefully less than this year, around
$1,100 to $1,300 for the event. Site fees would be less since there would be no
auction discount, maybe $12 per person with halfings half price. (It will depend
on what price I get from Green Gables.)
If this event bid is accepted, I will need a
co-autocrat, feastocrat, troll, servers, etc. (Lady Andree has already said she
will do high table again, thank you!!)![]()
![]()
All marshal activities are welcome. The lists will open
at 10:30 am with the first tourney scheduled to begin at 11:30 am. An A&S
competition will also be held. And a Bardic competition for which we encourage
all bards to find your best song or poem about murder or mayhem (funny or
serious). Children’s activities will be planned as well, please contact Morrigan
of the Willowbrook (Robbin Ford – 814-495-4018;
morriganofthewillowbrook@hotmail.com).
And what event focused on the merriment of murder and
mayhem would be complete without a little murder? To heighten the enjoyment,
we’re hoping to stage a murder mystery. As the event unfolds, a murder will be
committed, and participants will have the chance to practice their skills as a
sleuth and attempt to solve the crime.
A light lunch and murderously delicious Feast shall be
created by the hands of Rose Thorne (Sue Beth Rose –– 39 N Urania Ave.,
Greensburg, PA 15601; 724-850-7405;
rosethorne@att.net). If you have any dietary restrictions or questions,
please contact her. Feast shall be served near the hour of 5pm.
The gates for the event shall open at 10:00 am and
close at 10:00 pm. Cost of this event will be as follows: Onboard (includes site
fee, lunch & feast) – Adults - $8.00, Children ages 6-12 - $4.00; Off-board
(includes site fee & lunch) – Adults - $4.00, Children - $2.00. Children under
the age of 6 are free. Non-members must pay an additional $3.00 where
appropriate. The feast is limited to 40 people, please send reservations by May
28, 2004, to autocrat Caitilín ní Mhaolconaire (Kathleen Giesey –– 112 Deeds
Street, Ligonier, PA 15658; 724-238-0114;
snowdragon1027@yahoo.com). Make
