From the Baron & Baroness

Greetings fellow Boggers

Another Pennsic gone, but the memory remains. Thanks to everyone who made our last Pennsic as your Baron and Baroness a great experience.
Unto the candidates for the Baronial election. We look forward to a clean, friendly election. Remember people, we're family, so be nice.

From the Seneschal

Greetings and warm salutations to all who read these words,

Having returned from the Pennsic War 32, it is what is foremost on my mind, a will monopolize this missive. So please, bear with me.
There are many who deserve thanks for the efforts, time and contributions they make that enables us to enjoy our game. I'm sure I will miss someone, for I am only human. Please don't take offence, but perhaps view your efforts as subtle gifts that enrich, but don't blatantly advertise their giver.
An overall thank you to the war staff! All the services volunteers and all those who gave of their vacation time to serve others. In our local circles, Thank you to the Gobi Masters for their generosity! Thank you to Connor, Rudolf, Lodovic and Craig for sharing food at our parties. Your generosity and hard work are appreciated. Thank you to Spanky and your gang for the great bar. Thank you to everyone who helped others set up their camps. (Rummy, you ALWAYS are instrumental) Thank you to Dame Viv for armour dump space. Thanks to the Baronial Guard for protecting our nobles and the gates of AElthelmearc. Thanks to our Archers, Fencers, Fighters and Thrown weapons warriors for protecting our lands. On a personal note, Thank You to everyone who shared with me. Thanks for feeding me, showering me, watering me and putting up with me when I'm less than I should be. And in having to recognize my own shortcomings, it reminds me that we all have them. In recognizing that, it makes it so much easier not to judge, second guess or dictate the actions of others. With that knowledge it becomes easier to see what contributions others make, what good lies in them and how everyone can be integral  to our game. Thank you to all the Boggers, regardless of what interests you pursue, what households you may be in, what avenues of the Dream you explore- we all make the Bog what it is, we all add to the diversity of our Kingdom. It takes many characters to make an interesting story, and all of our characters definitely make it a worthwhile one to be part of. (and my God, the plot lines!)
Hoping to see all of you at Baronial Champs. Attend, have fun and share in our hobby. Do what we all do best: have fun and drive each other batty!!!! That's what family is for.

In service,
Lady Augusta Long called Talishar

News from the Western Border

Western Border of the Bog will meet on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at Adams Memorial Library (1112 Ligonier St., Latrobe; 724-539-1972) from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. As always, we have the room at 6pm so don’t be afraid to show up early. (Normally the group continues the gathering after 7:30pm at the Eat’n’Park in Latrobe located on route 30 just past the Westmoreland airport).

Greetings!

I want to remind everyone that Baronial Champs is coming up on Saturday, August 30th. Please see the announcement for times and directions. Kat has said the previous years champs are ready with their challenges for this year. Additionally, there is time set aside for those residing in the Western Border to discuss alternate meeting times and places, ideas for workshops. Getting to talk in person with a calendar set in front of us will help alleviate the confusion of emailing differing times and places. That is one of the benefit of actually having everyone together to plan things. Additionally, the call goes out once again for ideas for A&S workshops and volunteers to hold workshops/fighter practices, etc. And of course we will discuss the new group that is forming. Please bring a covered dish or beverages to share! I am looking forward to seeing everyone (and hoping you all bring Pennsic pics)!
Yes folks, we will be gathering at Adam's Memorial Library on the second Tuesday of September for the Western Border gathering. I hope that the appointed officers and steering committee of the newly forming shire will attend the meeting to share information regarding the merging of the Bog and BMDL in this area. If you have items you would like to have added to the agenda for September please contact me via email at ThornesKeep@hotmail.com or phone 724-850-7404.

In service,
Rose

Steering Committee Meeting:

Practice/Halloween Party invitation

Greetings good gentles of St. Swithin's,

It is time once again for our annual Halloween party, October 25, 2003. Our castle is open to all fighters, fencers, (thrown weapons and light archery, providing marshals attend) and to anyone who fancies spending time with us.
We have been granted this practice by the good graces of our Baron and Baroness and with the approval of our Knight Marshall making this an official Fighter Practice/Halloween Party. Please remember in order to participate in the above mentioned activities, your must show a blue membership card or sign a SCA waver.
Practice to commence at 1:00 P.M. and will end............... It is hoped that decent weather will be yet upon us so that torch light fighting/fencing can take place.
There will be Rune and Tarot Cards readings along with music to "die" for! LOL!!!!!!!
Please bring a side dish to share and of course, BYOB.

Hope to see you here,
THL's Tower & Cynthia :)

Pennsic Steering Committee

Greetings,

I am looking for some individuals willing to be part of a Pennsic Committee. This would be to plan for and execute things needed in the encampment. Just some planning to get everyone on the same page. Things like task responsibility. Camp rules and enforcement.

If interested let me know. I would like to have communications started while certain aspects are still fresh in our minds.

Tali

The Barony of St. Swithin's Bog Baronial Champs Event
Saturday, August 30th

10am until dark

The Baron and Baroness say let the populous come for FREE!

So now you have no excuse for not attending.

Food: The event will have an all day buffet that you may come and pick at when it suits you. I will be providing the main meat dish (something like venison chili and/or something else to use up all of this ground venison I have) and bread (to dip in the chili of course). Everyone attending is asked to bring an item for the buffet. If you are cooking, please try to make a period dish of your choice. Make your favorite medieval recipe to show off! Please do not make huge amounts or we'll have too much left over. But please bring copies of your recipe in case someone really goes crazy over it. There is a fireplace/grill in the main pavilion. If anyone wishes to take on the challenge of grilling, please let me know- and plan to bring your own food, cooking utensils and wood. If anyone has any special dietary or physical needs please also let me know ASAP so that I can take care of these things ahead of time. ALSO- please keep in mind the site does not have a refrigerator, but we will have tables with outlets nearby. Therefore, make food that will be ok sitting out all day (covered please), or can remain warming in a crock pot. If it needs to be kept chilled, please put it in a well iced cooler.

For those who are not cooking, then you may bring an item such as paper towels, extra plastic-ware, bowls, cups, plates, etc. (for others who may not have feast gear). For the culinary challenged, you may also want to just bring items such as cut up veggies, nuts, whole fruits, and other such period items that are fine just sitting in a bowl on a table- you know, good easy finger food! If you decide what you want to bring in advance, please let me know. Any extra items we have left over will be saved (if possible) for 12fth Night or another activity.

Drinks: I will be providing quick-mix iced tea and of course water. But this is a WET SITE!! So all of our brewers are expected to bring their best samples of their latest brews so the Autocrat...I mean, the Baron and Baroness, can sample them all!

Other needs & activities: If anyone has some good tarps, and tie down ropes, please let me know or just bring them in case we may need those to put up around the pavilions in case of rain (I only have one).

If anyone is interested in any other non-martial activities, please let me know your interests and I will try to accommodate you. Or just bring your stuff and we'll adlib. There is plenty of room to spread out and do other things: A&S work, dancing, etc.

*ALSO- we can have merchants at this site! If anyone would like to merchant, notification to me is nice, but not necessary. Remember rain could happen, so make sure your wares are well protected by your tent. I also own an easy to put up tent that would be available if you would need it, but it is open on all sides, not only good to provide shade, not rain protection.

LASTLY- The champions still need to contact me ASAP so I know what they are doing, how much space they need, what time frame they are thinking of for their activity, and if there is anything else needed by me. Send me an email, a phone call, anything- or force me to hunt you down. The Champions will be expected to bring their own supplies for their activities (rope, pegs, etc.), and they will be setting up their own areas as they see best when they get to the site. Champs, please try to get there early to claim some ground and set up.

I hope to see everyone there- and remember to think good weather thoughts!

DIRECTIONS:

From the East: make your best way to Rte 30 (through Ligonier) and West toward Latrobe. As you approach Latrobe, you’ll pass a traffic light - a bridge and damn on left - continue on Rte 30. Next, you’ll pass a BP Station on left, then see an overpass ahead. A Dodge dealership is on right, and the turn is approx. 150 Ft after; staying in the right-hand lane, get off at the first exit for Rte 982 & Latrobe (before going under the overpass); at the top of the ramp, merge onto Rte 982 toward Latrobe. ***Stay on this road, you’ll cross over a bridge and come to a traffic light, continue straight; you’ll come to a 2nd traffic light (a Sheetz is on left) continue straight; you will then go over railroad tracks continue straight about one block, make a Right onto Raymond Avenue go about 2 blocks and make another right hand turn and an immediate left hand turn into the parking lot. There will also be large SCA signs to help guide you.

From the West: make your best way to Rte 30 passed Greensburg and East to Latrobe. Beginning at the Arnold Palmer Airport, you will go through 3 traffic lights (beware, just after the 2nd light, they are doing construction and the road may be down to one lane). After the Drive-in Theater on your right, you will start down a hill and see an overpass, get in the right lane - continue on Rte 30 going under the overpass and immediately take the right-hand turn. You will loop up onto Rte 982 toward Latrobe. The road will cross over Rte 30. *** Follow from above.
